The Dark Path, by Luke Romyn, is a horror-action novel that grabs the reader by the throat and doesn’t let go until it has ripped you back and forth, up and down, and side to side. It is a roller coaster of a read that explores the dark underbelly of the crime world as well as the possibilities of redemption, even for the darkest of souls.

The plot follows Vain, a peerless assassin who uses the moniker Dark Man as he systematically dispatches target after target with no regret. But when he is tasked with protecting a young boy, Vain’s world is turned upside down. Sebastian, the young boy Vain is chosen to guard, is the Avun-Ryah, a being of pure light and goodness. Chasing the Avun-Ryah are four beings of lore and mystery; the four horsemen of the apocalypse. With the horsemen and their cult of followers hot on their heels, Vain must put all of his skills to the test and travel from New York City, to Rome and Tibet, and finally to the gates of Hell themselves. New allies give him aid and not all enemies are as they seem upon first inspection, but ultimately it is up to Vain to put aside his vicious past to help save the world from darkness.

This is a very well paced novel. It is action packed and has a very even balance between horror and action-adventure. Highly recommended for those who enjoy books on demons or the battle between heaven and hell. Fairly strong language and graphic violence might make a few turn away, but the read is definitely worth it. Don’t miss out.
